Three main characteristics make Antimicrobial Copper the most effective* touch surface material:
Copper Continuously kills bacteria
Efficacy as an antimicrobial is proven far more effective than stainless steel or silver-containing coatings Proven to continuously kill the bacteria* that cause infections. The only solid metal antimicrobial touch surfaces registered by EPA.
Never wears out:
Continuous and ongoing antimicrobial action. Remains effective even after repeated wet & dry abrasion and re-contamination, Natural tarnishing does not impair efficacy.
Safe to use
Not harmful to people or the environment. Inherently antimicrobial, no chemicals added and completely recyclable. Check out this link for more information http://www.antimicrobialcopper.com/us/why-antimicrobial-copper/introduction-to-antimicrobial-copper.aspx
Copper is Antimicrobial
Humans have exploited the inherent antimicrobial properties of copper since the dawn of civilization. Scientific research demonstrates copper’s antimicrobial effect and supports its use in applications where control of contamination benefits society, such as healthcare, heating & air-conditioning and public transport. Copper alloys are the only solid surfaces registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as antimicrobial public health products. Innovations & Technology
Some things never change! Ten thousand years ago, cave dwellers decided to use copper to make axes to use as weapons and tools for survival. Today, high tech surgeons are able to save lives and precious blood by using copper-clad scalpels. The copper actually conducts an electric current that heats the scalpel to make it self-cauterizing. It’s amazing all the things we use copper for. This link will offer you more information on Copper innovations and technology http://www.copper.org/consumers/copperhome/Technology/
MRSA
NEW YORK, NY – MRSA—the super virulent bacteria that is a leading cause of infections during patient hospitalization—has met its match: Antimicrobial Copper. A live webcast experiment demonstrated that Antimicrobial Copper effectively kills MRSA within two hours while it readily survives on stainless steel.
Copper Found Usable After 5,000 Years
Archaeologist have recovered a portion of a water plumbing system from the Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt. The copper tubing used was found in serviceable condition after more than 5,000 years
Copper Could Help Contain Flu
Copper could help prevent flu infections. Recent studies at the University of Southampton, U.K., show that Influenza A is virtually eradicated within six hours on copper surfaces. Influenza A viruses cause an average of 200,000 hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths a year in the USA, alone. The Influenza A family of viruses includes the problematic Avian flu strain.

Is there a reason that recycled copper is not used in your products?
We do not want to compromise our copper work by using copper with impurities. Recycled copper is great for may applications but not ours. We strive to provide our clients the best possible custom copper sinks and in order to do this we use high grade copper material milled to our specifications.
Will copper sinks hold heat?
Yes, Copper is a conductor of heat that has been used as early as 3900Bc in Egypt as household vessels and cooking pots.
Will these copper sinks rust?
No, all grades of copper are resistant to atmospheric corrosion and will not rust. Over time copper will patina.
Are these sinks mass produced or stamped?
These hand hammered copper sinks are not massed produced or stamped. Mountain Copper Creations sinks are individually hand hammered and fired using 51 oz copper material with welded copper construction. Each sink is custom designed and created by Jim Clapham a master craftsman and artist.
Are these sinks hard to clean?
To enhance the antique look of the sinks a mild soap is all that’s needed. Minimal Care is needed due to the natural antibacterial component in copper. Simply rinse the sink after each use or for a thorough cleaning wash with dish soap and rinse. We recommend letting your copper sink age naturally to enhance the rich colors of the copper. Is there any danger with copper and food contact?
No, a team from the University of South Hampton found that copper has bacteria killing properties that combat dangerous bacteria such as e-coli. This research goes on to state that this dangerous bacteria can live for more than a month on stainless steel. However at room temperature copper killed the bacteria in just four hours. Even at cooled temperatures the bacteria was killed in 14 hours.
